Vehicle Requirements

Last updated: May 5, 2025

At Rovor, we maintain high standards for all vehicles in our network to ensure a consistent, high-quality experience for our riders. This guide outlines the requirements your vehicle must meet to qualify for the Rovor platform.

General Vehicle Requirements

Regardless of vehicle type, all vehicles on the Rovor platform must meet these basic requirements:

  • Must be registered in British Columbia
  • Must have valid commercial insurance coverage
  • Must pass our initial vehicle inspection and subsequent regular inspections
  • Must be clean and well-maintained, inside and out
  • Must not have any branding or advertising from other companies
  • Must have functional air conditioning and heating
  • No significant body damage or mechanical issues

Vehicle Age Requirements

To ensure reliability and safety, vehicles must meet the following age requirements:

  • Cargo Vans: 2015 or newer
  • Box Trucks: 2015 or newer
  • Pickup Trucks: 2015 or newer
  • Passenger Vans: 2018 or newer

These requirements are based on the calendar year, not model year. For example, in 2025, a 2015 vehicle is exactly at the 10-year limit for most vehicle types.

Required Equipment

All vehicles must have the following equipment:

  • First aid kit (meeting WorkSafeBC requirements)
  • Fire extinguisher (ABC type, minimum 2.5 lbs)
  • Safety triangles or road flares
  • Smartphone mount for safe device use
  • Tie-down straps or cargo securing equipment
  • Basic tools for minor adjustments

Safety Equipment

Rovor provides a standard safety equipment package to all new drivers during onboarding. This package includes most of the required safety items. You are responsible for maintaining this equipment and replacing items as needed.

Vehicle Inspection Process

All vehicles must pass our inspection process before being approved for use on the Rovor platform. Here's what to expect:

  1. Initial Inspection: Once you've completed the driver application process, our team will schedule an initial vehicle inspection at one of our approved inspection centers in Vancouver.
  2. Inspection Points: The inspection will cover mechanical condition, safety equipment, cargo space measurements, and overall vehicle condition.
  3. Documentation Verification: You'll need to provide vehicle registration, insurance documents, and maintenance records during the inspection.
  4. Regular Re-inspections: Vehicles on the Rovor platform must be re-inspected every 6 months or every 20,000 kilometers, whichever comes first.

Ongoing Maintenance Requirements

To ensure your vehicle remains in good condition and compliant with our standards:

  • Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule
  • Keep detailed records of all maintenance and repairs
  • Address any mechanical issues promptly
  • Maintain a clean interior and exterior
  • Perform daily safety checks before going online

Insurance Requirements

All vehicles on the Rovor platform must maintain the following insurance coverage:

  • Commercial vehicle insurance with ICBC
  • Minimum $2 million in third-party liability coverage
  • For passenger vans: Additional passenger hazard insurance
  • Optional: Cargo insurance (recommended for higher-value items)

Rovor provides additional insurance coverage that activates when you're online and fulfilling rides through our platform. However, this supplemental coverage does not replace your need for primary commercial insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a leased or financed vehicle?

Yes, as long as the vehicle meets all other requirements and your lease agreement allows for commercial use. You'll need to provide documentation of lease/finance agreement approval for commercial transportation.

What if my vehicle is slightly older than the requirement?

We may make exceptions for vehicles that are in exceptional condition and meet all other requirements. These exceptions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and typically involve a more thorough inspection.

Do I need special license plates or registration?

Yes, depending on your vehicle type and intended use. Box trucks over certain weight limits and passenger vans require commercial vehicle registration with ICBC. Our team can guide you through this process during onboarding.

What if my vehicle gets damaged while driving for Rovor?

You must report any damage to Rovor immediately, regardless of severity. Depending on the damage, your vehicle may be temporarily deactivated until repairs are completed and verified.

Vehicle Upgrade Assistance Program

Rovor offers an optional Vehicle Upgrade Assistance Program for qualified drivers who need to purchase, upgrade, or retrofit their vehicles to meet our requirements. This program includes:

  • Access to fleet discounts with partner vehicle dealerships
  • Financing options with preferred rates
  • Guidance on selecting appropriate vehicles for the platform
  • Installation support for required equipment

To learn more about this program, please contact the Driver Support team after completing your initial application.
